Le FARBAND propose, en vidéo-projection, l’extraordinaire et très émouvant film documentaire de Valérie Firla et Murielle Levy, qui retrace la vie et l'œuvre de Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943), peintre majeur de l'Ecole de Paris dont les tableaux sont accrochés dans les plus grands musées d'Art moderne.
Il est né en 1893 dans une famille lituanienne juive orthodoxe de Smilovitchi, un shtetl de quatre cents habitants situé à une vingtaine de kilomètres au sud-est de Minsk, dans une zone où le pouvoir impérial contraint les Juifs à une vie quasi-autarcique.
La famille vit alors dans une grande pauvreté, comme presque toutes celles du shtetl, ce qui génère des violences s'ajoutant à l'angoisse des pogroms. Elle observe les principes religieux de la Torah et le jeune Soutine fréquente l'école talmudique.
Sa vie d’alors est mal connue, jusqu’à son arrivée à Paris, probablement en 1912.
Souvent décrit comme très timide voire insociable, il traverse plusieurs années de misère parmi la bohème de Montparnasse, la reconnaissance n'arrivant que dans les années 1920.
Soutine est l'un des peintres rattachés habituellement, avec Chagall ou Modigliani, à ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler l'École de Paris. Tout en se référant volontiers aux grands maîtres, à commencer par Rembrandt, et en se cantonnant à trois genres canoniques de la peinture figurative -portraits, paysages, natures mortes-, il a créé une œuvre singulière, d'une palette vive et contrastée. Ses toiles se signalent plus encore par un travail en épaisseur qui pousse toujours plus loin l'expérience de la peinture en tant que matière, dans le sillage d'un Van Gogh, et ouvrant la voie aux expériences artistiques de la seconde moitié du XXème siècle. Les couleurs flamboyantes et l'aspect torturé de ses œuvres les ont souvent fait rapprocher de l'expressionnisme.

Les millions de visiteurs qui ont admiré la statue de la Liberté à New York, ce symbole de l’amitié franco-américaine, et ont remarqué, à l’intérieur du socle, une plaque en bronze à la gloire d’une poétesse américaine juive : Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), dont le poème The New Colossus est gravé sur une autre plaque.
Qui est donc cette femme, cette illustre inconnue, qui bénéficie d’un tel honneur?

Tous ces personnages vont se croiser dans une suite de rebondissements, quiproquos, humour, magie et sensualité.
Théâtre, musique, théâtre d'objets, tout est mis en oeuvre pour nous faire voyager le temps d'une nuit d'été ensorcelante.

Stupeur, de Zeruya Shalev

Cette auteure israélienne est déjà bien connue en France pour ses précédents romans notamment « Ce qui reste de nos vies ((Prix Femina 2011) et Douleur.
Son dernier roman Stupeur nous raconte la rencontre de deux femmes totalement dissemblables (âge, parcours, caractère…) qu’a priori rien ne semble relier.
Il explore, d’une manière parfois convulsive et éruptive, le fonctionnement des couples, la famille, les rapports parents-enfant, la confusion des sentiments. Il nous montre aussi à quel point, les destinées des deux femmes s’inscrivent dans l’histoire de l’Etat et de la société Israël. « Les vies sont faites de l’histoire, l’histoire fait nos vies ». C’est enfin, une vision et une dissection de la société israélienne et de de ses transformations depuis la lutte pour la création de l’Etat. Les utopies fondatrices se sont dissipées, et dans une société devenue « ultra-libérale privilégiant l’accomplissement personnel, la religion apparait à certains comme la seule lumière.

La dignité retrouvée du cinéaste Bernard Natan

Nous avions déjà consacré une soirée au FARBAND sur Bernard NATHAN, né Natan Tannenzaft de parents juifs en Roumanie, qui a contribué à fonder l'industrie du cinéma en France et a été l'un des personnages les plus importants de l’industrie cinématographique de l’avant-guerre.
Avec son dernier livre, "L'affaire Bernard NATAN, les années sombre du cinéma français", Dominique Missikav revient sur la carrière du producteur juif dont le succès fut interrompu par la montée de l’antisémitisme et qui fut assassiné à Auschwitz.
